Understanding the Risks of Leptospirosis During the Rainy Season

ree

There is without a doubt an increase in leptospirosis in dogs and the rainy season. Unvaccinated dogs are more at risk, even those that had their shots as puppies but have not received their annual booster shots.

The signs of leptospirosis include loos of appetite, vomiting, lethargy, fever, often followed by jaundice (yellow gums and eyes). The prognosis is guarded at best, but many don't survive, and the treatment is expensive, with no guarantees.

Treatment requires hospitalization, Intravenous fluids, antibiotics and lots of care.

However you can reduce the risk of your dog getting this often fatal disease quite easily by ensuring that your pets gets vaccinated annually. Especially as the rains arrive.

No appointment is needed, just bring your pet to Eastern Veterinary Clinic anytime during regular hours, and our veterinarians will happily help you protect your pet.
